Severe Storm Information & Preparation
In light of the recent severe storm, we thought you might find it helpful to have a list of resources for important storm information. For more information about what to do in storms & severe weather, you can also check out the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center website and the American Red Cross website. See our STORM PREPARATION PAGE for more information about preparing for Severe Weather in Texas. The storm was very scary so we thought our readers might want a chance to share their experiences. As we talked to many of our friends in the area we noticed a common experience. Many families huddled in a bathroom or closet. Some even slept through the entire experience! We're just glad you all are safe! It sounds like there was thankfully very little damage done in Collin County.
Share your experience with us by sending us an email. Here's what some of you had to say about the storm: Well, in light of how serious the storms were..I thought I would bring a little laughter to the situation. My neighborhood is fortunate enough to have a tornado siren sitting in it..so we heard the siren loud and clear at 4am. My husband and I carefully woke the kids up (we experienced a tornado siren 2 weeks prior during the day...so it was a bit of a drill for us..so we were prepared). I ran and got the baby and calmly woke up my 2 girls (6 and 2 years old). We brought them to our master bath and one by one..put them in the garden tub. We just got a new puppy...so we put her in the tub too... My 2 year old looked up at mommy and daddy and said "I DO NOT WANT TO TAKE A BATH IN MOMMY'S TUB...AND I DO NOT WANT TO TAKE A BATH WITH MY DOGGIE....I WANT TO TAKE A BATH IN MY TUB WITH MY TOYS!" It added a little humor to an otherwise scary situation!

If some people were not awakened by the local siren announcements there is a way to be alerted by phone. When severe weather warnings are issued in your area, The Weather Channel alerts you by phone. There is a small fee for the service but worth it if you are worried you will not hear the sirens. Here is the site for more info. http://www.weather.com/services/notify.html?from=hp_tools _________________________ Me, my husband, three kids, two big dogs (labs!) and a nervous cat were all SQUISHED in a 1/2 bath under the stairs at 4am. It totally mangled a wooden swing set we have in the back- you cannot even tell what it was!! Yikes!! __________________________ My husband saw tons of damage on his way to work this morning. I woke up about 3:45 and we heard a very distinct roar that sent my husband and I both scrambling. He ran and got our son from upstairs and I cleaned out our under the stairs closet. By the time we met up our tornado sirens were going off. So thankful it skipped our neighborhood. We just got my husband's car back from the last hail storm and just got our new roof put on. __________________________ Had about 5 minutes of serious wind - my husband and I both jumped out of bed and ran into each other on the way out of our bedroom (obviously not fully awake yet ;). But it cleared quickly and we had no damage. We got the kids and went into the closet. My 18 month old daughter thought it was party time since we were all up & together. My five year old barely remembers being carried in the closet he was so sleepy! ____________________________ We slept right through it!! Ha! Ha! Can’t believe none of my kiddos woke up! __________________________ I heard it the sirens, just went back to bed! ________________________ Everythings good here! Our next door neighbor lost ½ of their big tree (still sitting across their whole yard). _____________________________ Had a few power surges here and there, but all seems to be ok. A few other folks had some problems. _________________________ I don't usually get spooked with bad weather, but it sounded like a freight train! The trees in my yard looked like they were going to crack. But I went back to bed. ___________________________ My husband, three daughters and I were huddled in the downstairs closet. Unfortunately our youngest daughter was sick & spent the time in there throwing up. ________________________ I grabbed the kids and quickly cleared out the closet under the stairs so we could seek safety there. My 14 month old had a great time b/c there were some toys in the closet for her to play with! _________________________ We're new to Texas & aren't familiar with these storms. We weren't exactly sure what to do so we went to an interior bathroom. After this experience I'm packing a Disaster Kit! Just exhausted…..I slept maybe two hours and got my daughter up in the middle of it to sit in a closet! ___________________________ We live in N.Carrollton near the intersection of Old Denton and Hebron Pkwy. That night we were sleeping when the storm hit. My eleven old daughter heard the alarms going off. She peaked threw the window and stated she seen a tornado in the sky near us. Fortunately it missed us and did some property damage to houses, fences, and trees. The storm downed two high tension power lines that streched across Hebron Pkwy..Well my daughter`s school had no power.
