Announcements:About the Jeffries Street Learning CenterThe mission of the Jeffries Street Learning Center is to enhance the quality of life for residents of South Dallas and to break the cycle of poverty. The center started 22 years ago as a safe haven where children could get help with homework and learn computer skills after school. Now it provides programming for children year-round, as well as services to all ages in the surrounding neighborhoods. In the morning, adults get GED, literacy, and employment skills training, and seniors get together monthly for bingo and fellowship. For more information, please visit the website!
Calling all VendorsDo you have a unique craft or gift item you would like to sell? Participate in the Christmas in the Square's Santa Gift Shop benefiting FFSC. Vendors will be selling their wonderful merchandise on December 12 and 13, 19 and 20, from 5:30pm - 9:30pm at Frisco Square. As you may know, Frisco Square is a very busy place during the holidays with the light show, Santa Clause, and new this year, an ice skating rink. Clothe-A-Child Frisco/Little ElmOpportunities to Get Involved: Crossroads Family Services Looking for VolunteersCrossroads Family Services is looking for individuals who are available to assist victims of family violence in Collin County as volunteers with the Crisis Response Team. Once trained, volunteers go out in teams of two to provide ON SCENE crisis intervention (police officers will be on site), assist in locating family violence shelters, and provide information on how to get protective orders, Crime Victims’ Compensation, and social servic. Opportunities are also available for ON-CALL Coordinators – these volunteers are responsible for dispatching the on-site volunteers and may volunteer from home. Requirements: 21 year age minimum. FIVE New Neighborhood Parks OPEN!Coyote Crossing, located near Eldorado Parkway and Hillcrest Road, is a six-acre park featuring several nautical themed amenities. This park includes a playground system, walking trail, picnic areas, and open space for outdoor activities including athletic practices.
Foncine Settlement is a seven-acre park near Eldorado Parkway and Custer Road. Amenities include a walking trail, playground system, a picnic pavilion and picnic tables, plus, an open space for athletic practices and other outdoor activities. J.C. Grant Park is located at 9611 Wade Blvd., adjacent to Otis Spears Elementary School. This nine-acre park features an open field area for athletic practices, a playground system with miniature climbing wall, walking trail, picnic pavilion and tables. Visitors are already admiring the public art piece featured here -- a beautiful stone horse and covered wagon. Tuscany Meadows Park is a six-acre park located near Lebanon Road and Hillcrest Road. Features of this park include a playground system, an open space for athletic practices including a basketball and soccer goal, a walking trail, and a picnic pavilion and tables. Vivian Stark McCallum Park is a peaceful five-acre park. Located within the Queens Gate neighborhood community, the park includes open space for outdoor activities, a playground system, walking trails and a picnic pavilion and tables. Frisco Cares Children’s Medical ClinicFrisco Cares Children’s Medical Clinic, a non-profit, volunteer-based provider of acute health care to the uninsured children of Frisco, is now open on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month. The mobile clinic bus is located in the parking lot of Acker Elementary School in Frisco, 7159 Hickory Street, one block east of 5th Street. Appointment cards for that evening can be picked up between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. Anyone 18 years old or younger is eligible if they are without insurance (which includes Medicaid and CHIP) and live within the Frisco ISD (proof of residency required – current utility bill or report card). There is a $5 fee per visit including medications. Frisco Fire Department - CPR Classes
Frisco Fire Department - First Aid ClassesThe Frisco Fire Department also offers American Heart Association Heartsaver First Aid courses as companion courses to CPR training. The classes are free of charge to Frisco residents and those employed here and provide a general background in simple first aid concepts. Classes are limited to 30 participants, so please call Central Fire Station at 972-335-5525 to make reservations. Frisco Humane Society needs VolunteersFrisco Humane Society is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization that rescues dogs and cats primarily from Animal Control facilities. All animals in the FHS program live in foster homes until they are adopted. We provide all the necessary medical care for each animal, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. But we can only rescue as many animals as we have foster homes for – so if you would like to volunteer or foster dogs or cats with us, please go to our website, www.friscohumanesociety.com for more information or you can call our voicemail 972-498-8980 and leave a message on any of the lines.
Our dog adoptions are held from 12-5 p.m. on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Saturdays of every month at the Frisco PetSmart. Our cat adoptions are held from 12-5 pm every Saturday and Sunday in both the Frisco and East Plano PetSmart stores. Cats are showcased in both centers 7 days a week and appointments can be made to adopt cats during the week as well. Operation Neighbor’s PorchOperation Neighbors Porch is taking the Biblical phrase “Love your neighbor as yourself” to the next level. Participants in this new project can visit their local store and purchase a hanging flower basket or plant and attach a note that includes the gospel message. They will then secretly leave it on a random neighbor’s porch. The note and gospel message are available for download on the Operation Neighbor’s Porch Web site. The goal is for neighbors to bless other neighbors with something tangible while spreading God’s love and the message of the gospel.
Railroad Museum Moving to FriscoThe Museum of the American Railroad has entered into an agreement with the City of Frisco to relocate its permanent collection and operations to that city. The new museum will anchor other cultural heritage facilities and compliment a system of planned parks and recreational areas. Formerly known as the “Age of Steam”, the Museum of the American Railroad is a 45-year old Dallas institution currently located in Fair Park. It houses an extensive collection of historic locomotives, rail passenger cars, and related artifacts. The museum’s mission is to …share with the general public the heritage, as well as the current and future development of American Railroading through artistic, cultural and educational programming.The new Museum of the American Railroad will anchor other cultural heritage facilities in Frisco and compliment a 250 acre system of planned outdoor spaces and recreational areas known as Grand Park. Star Bazaar Looking for VendorsThe Frisco High School Stars Drill Team will be having a Craft Show "Star Bazaar" on Saturday, October 4th from 9am-4pm at Frisco High School, and we are looking for vendors to display their crafts. Store Help Needed at Frisco ResaleAll you wonderful people who like to help…..Frisco Family Services Center would love to speak with you about volunteering at our Frisco Resale Store!! With a 54% increase in client services within the past two years, and now distributing 19,500 pounds of food each month (up from 12,500 pounds of food, just since last summer), volunteers help us utilize our funds for client services. By volunteering, you will indirectly be helping families in need, AND get the wonderful experience of connecting with others in your community. Support Family ServicesFrisco Family Services Center would like to extend the hours of the food panty to better meet the needs of our clients. To do this, volunteers are needed who can routinely work one day a week from 3 PM to 5 PM. In addition to the food pantry, volunteers are also needed to be substitutes in the afternoons at the reception desk. Vendors Wanted for Holiday BazaarThe 5th Annual Holiday Bazaar at Grace Avenue United Methodist Church will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2008 from 9 am to 3 pm. The Bazaar will be held in conjunction with our annual pumpkin patch, Pumpkins on the Prairie, and will be well advertised through this source, signage around Frisco, Dallas Morning News, and other outlets. If you sell hand-crafted items or have a home-based business and would like to participate, please contact Sharon Rankin at psrankin@tx.rr.com and you will receive a contract and all the details about the Holiday Bazaar. This year we are offering 3 booth location options. Booths will be assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis and will sell out. Please note that only one vendor from each home-based business such as Mary Kay, Tupperware, Southern Living, etc. will be accepted. VOLUNTEERS NEEDEDThe Lion's Club is looking for volunteers over the age of 15 to help with set up and tear down at the Frisco Farmers Market this season.
