Things to Do When You're Stuck Inside

Maybe you can't go out because the weather is rainy or too cold. But that doesn't mean you can't get some exercise while you're inside.

Turn on your favorite music and dance. Invite your dog or cat to join in the fun. Or grab a hula hoop and make up some hula-hoop dances.

Jump Rope - If there is enough room, you can jump rope and count how many times you jump without missing.

There are basketball hoops with over-the-door hooks and basketballs made from soft foam that are meant to be played with indoors. If you have them and there is enough room, set them up and shoot some hoops. Have a tournament with everyone in the house - may the best basketball player win!

More things to do when you're stuck at home:

  • Do some tumbling if you have enough room to do it.
  • Set up a scavenger hunt.
  • Bat a balloon back and forth and try not to let it hit the floor.
  • Write your own stories (great for school age kids) & act them out if you're willing
  • Count like items in the house - count how many lamps, how many beds etc. Whoever gets the most right or finishes first can win a prize!
  • Do Crafts
  • Have a Coloring Contest
  • Help mom make a yummy snack like cupcakes - which could also be the reward for the contests
  • Make funny faces in the mirror
  • Read stories to each other - or if you have preschoolers or toddlers, make your own circle & do your own story time. Snuggle up with favorite blankies or lovies.
  • Write letters or draw pictures for Grandma
  • Start a journal
  • Make a photo album
  • Jumping Jacks - great one to wear kids out!
  • Take pictures of your funny faces or other things you've done at home today. Then email them to dad at work or to Grandma. Print them out for your photo album.
  • Gather up all that loose change floating around the house. Kids can count it as a math project. Help preschoolers with this one. Then it's up to you whether you want to teach kids how to save it or allow them to spend it next time you're out.
  • Make bean bags using real beans and ziploc bags (or other materials you may have at home) and have a bean bag toss to see who can toss the bags the furthest
Kids have great imaginations and can always think of lots more games to make up and things to do.

And here's one thing not to do: Try not to say, "I'm bored. There's nothing to do." As you just found out, there's always something to do!
